Deadline extended for Free School

Students can still apply to go to a new Free School even though it’s past the deadline.

The official closing date for applications to the controversial Bedford Free School which is opening in Cauldwell Street in September was Friday.

So far, 130 pupils have registered to join - just two of which came through Bedford Borough Council - but the school is still allowed to continue accepting pupils until it’ has reached the maximum of 100 for Year 7 and 9.

Due to a technicality, the Free School for 11 to 16 year olds was not included on the council’s online “options” for senior schools and it had just two requests for Year 9 places.

Mark Lehain, principal designate of the facility, said they were expecting others to apply in the weeks and months to follow.
