One of the biggest schools in the area is applying to become an academy.

Mark Rutherford School in Wentworth Drive, Bedford, (pictured) is currently in a consultation process which will see it become independent from Bedford Borough Council.

Head teacher Stephen Peacey said that there had been ‘full and frank’ discussions with governors and that parents and staff have been informed of the plans.

Despite no longer being under the control of the Local Education Authority (LEA) Mr Peacey revealed the school may buy back some of its services.

Last week Bedfordshire on Sunday reported how special school The Grange in Kempston was also applying to become an academy. The Mark Rutherford head said that most schools are now looking to detach themselves from LEAs by turning to academy status which allows a school to control its own budget.

Mr Peacey said: “You will find that most schools are looking at becoming academies and we are one of a number of those.

“We had full and frank discussions with governors and we wrote to parents. The talks we had were about us becoming a converted academy.

“It allows you to become more independent and offers a school more freedom but you still can buy back services from the LEA which we will be considering.
