On Saturday the quarter-finals of the National Men’s Indoor Bowls Club Championship, the Denny Cup, will be held at Kempston Park IBC, from 11am.
The teams who have fought their way through to this stage are Spalding and Desborough.
This event is one of the top tournaments in the country and the standard of competition is very high.
Both teams include recognised players who are among the country’s top bowlers.
Spalding will have two current England Internationals in their team, Graham Smith and Martin Spencer (after this match they go on to represent England in the Stanley Cup) and they also have one past international, Paul Simpson and an U25 international, Matt Whyers.
Desborough include three internationals in their side, Robert Newman, John McGuinness and Andy Knapper, all of whom expect to be in England’s team for the Commonwealth Games.
The last time these teams met, the match was decided on the very last bowl of the last end.
The club at Kempston has just been ‘reborn’ and the placing of this important event at the club recognises the progress made in the first few months and the status that the venue is held in throughout the country.
