Ed: Keep winning and we'll stay on tails of Stevenage

Luton Town defender Ed Asafu-Adjaye believes they are doing everything they can to force an automatic promotion fight but must hope other clubs slip up.

Luton beat Kidderminster 3-1 on Tuesday to keep the pressure on the Blue Square Premier’s top two, while leaders Stevenage beat Histon 1-0 so the gap between them and third placed Hatters remains five points. Borough have a game in hand, but the left back believes his team must keep winning.

“It’s getting closer and closer,” he said. “We need Stevenage to drop a couple of points but we’ll keep pressing and keep picking up as many points as we can and hope we can be on their tails.”

Town have hit a purple patch of form with the win over Harriers making it four wins in a row and three at home – their best consecutive return at Kenilworth Road this season.

Asafu-Adjaye said it helped that Kiddie came to play football, rather than stifle Town as so many other teams have done this season. And he saluted their tactics especially after losing 5-1 to Stevenage in the first leg of the FA Trophy semi-final on Saturday.

“We like it when teams come and play against us,” he said. “It makes it a better game, though it might be a harder game, but it’s more enjoyable for the lads because we can try and play football against them.

“We didn’t get a clean sheet but it is three points. It wasn’t the easiest of games but I thought the team battled and had to scrap at times, and that’s what it’s like some times.

“When you get beaten like they did there’s two ways you can come out of it. It could be all guns blazing and you end up smashing a team or you can get beaten up and lose again.

“I thought they did well at times, they moved it well but luckily we held them off. We were very organised and I thought that made the difference.”

The win saw a more composed Luton and they did not get flustered when Steve Burr’s side hit back almost instantly after Kevin Gallen put the hosts 2-0 up. The defender believes this is another aspect which has seen them perform so well of late.

“It’s come to the point where we understand that a game is 90 minutes long and if something goes against us it’s not the end of the game, we can still turn it around,” said Asafu-Adjaye.

“We’ve had a couple of games recently, with Oxford being the biggest, and it just shows we can come back from anything.”
