Bicknell 'proud' despite Vase exit

OADBY TOWN 2 AMPTHILL TOWN 1
FA Vase fourth round

Ampthill Town’s record breaking cup run finally came to an end as they lost a game to remember at Oadby Town.

The South Midlands Division One side came into the game as the first club in the league’s history to ever reach the FA Vase Fourth Round and after a brave effort in front of 500 spectators narrowly missed out on round five.

Yet it was the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division side that handled the occasion better at the start and flew into a 2-0 lead with 30 minutes played.

Ampthill keeper Tom Kennard then made a series of top saves to ensure his side were still in the game at the break.

In the second half the visitors looked galvanised and got a deserved goal in the dying minutes.

Chris Lester tapped home, but the drama continued as Danny Nicholls missed a golden opportunity at the death to take the game into extra time.

Ampthill manager Craig Bicknell said: “I’m a little disappointed with the result as we froze in the first 20 minutes.

However, I’m so proud of the lads for their achievement, as a football club we can stand up and be counted now.”

Chairman Bernie Stuttard said: “I’m extremely proud of Craig, his management team and the boys for what they’ve achieved. I didn’t think we deserved to lose on the balance of the play but I’d like to wish Oadby the best of luck in the competition.”
