Striker Rene Howe has signed on loan for Rushden & Diamonds on the eve of the new Blue Square Bet Premier season.
The 23-year-old, who started his career with Bedford Town before moving to Kettering Town in 2006, has joined Justin Edinburgh's squad from Peterborough United until January.
During his spell at the Poppies he scored 25 times in 40 appearances and has had loan periods at Rochdale, Morecambe, Lincoln City and Gillingham since being on the books at Posh.
Edinburgh said: “He’ll be part of the squad for Saturday’s game, which is good news. It's come at a good time for us because its been a tough week.
"It’s a great opportunity for him to put himself in the shop window, if he does well for us we’ll obviously be pleased with that, and it’s a great opportunity for him to get himself back into the league.
"He showed that ability last year, he scored goals in League One, he had loans at Morecambe and Rochdale where he’s done well so I have no fears about his quality, and I’m sure he’ll be looking to get some goals."
The move comes after former Bedford Town manager and current Peteborough United director of football, Barry Fry, said the forward needed a new challenge.
Fry was at The Eyrie to see a Posh XI beat Bedford 3-0 in a pre-season friendly, where Howe scored the opener on his old hunting ground.
Afterwards he said: "Rene has not had the best of times. We bought him from Kettering Town and Bedford got a few quid out of it.
"Really, he hasn't had a chance at Peterborough. He's been loaned out, went to Morecambe and got a lot of goals, went to Rochdale and got a lot of goals. He's been to the play-off final at Wembley. He went to Gillingham and Lincoln and done well.
"He's on the transfer list now but he's lost his way a little bit now, which is a shame because he's got a lot of ability.
"He's had so many setbacks that he needs a manager to believe in him, put their arm around him and get him on the right track again.
"He played a game in Rushden and there's been a few clubs enquire about him, but that's all they've done. None have taken the enquiry any further.
"I hope he gets fixed up soon because he needs a different challenge."
