Tomes taking last throw of the dice with Bedford

One last shot at glory - that’s how summer signing Sean Tomes views his move to Bedford Blues.

The the 26-year-oldlock made the switch to Goldington Road from Premiership-bound Championship winners Exeter Chiefs, signing before the Devon club’s play-off final victory over Bristol in May.

The 6ft 6ins forward has played in the top flight with Newcastle Falcons and the Magners League with Newport Gwent Dragons, but after sitting much of the Chiefs’ charge to the title out on the sidelines he is a driven man, determined to make his mark with Mike Rayer’s men.

“I see this as a last throw of the dice for me in  professional rugby, so I’m looking to really take this opportunity with both hands and go forward with it,” said Tomes.

“I wanted to move on and I wasn’t overly happy with Exeter.

“I didn’t play too much for them after Christmas, a few times off the bench but not as often as I’d like.

“It’s good to be here and I heard a lot about Bedford as I wanted to join a team that was exciting, wanted to throw the ball about and express themselves. It’s a fresh start. All players want to start games and I’m no different.

“I joined here thinking, ‘I’ve got to back myself, train hard and see if I can get the results I think I deserve.’”

Tomes, who is the son of former Scottish international Alan Tomes, insists that the ethos of his new club is incredibly appealing to players and a major reason why Blues have attracted some quality stars in this close season.

He said: “Bedford have always been near the top of the table but it’s their reputation of throwing the ball around. It’s not silly rugby, but exciting rugby, and that’s something that Exeter didn’t have at all.

“It was win at all costs but Bedford have a reputation of running and crowd-pleasing rugby, and they also win games out of it as well.

“I don’t want to flatter myself but there has been some quality signings to an already quality squad. It can only be a good thing. I don’t know how many players were lost over the off-season but we are looking forward to the new campaign and we’re all working to the same goal.”
