Seal's seven-week ban is a shock for boss Rayer

Mike Rayer admitted that Bedford Blues were surprised to have Dan Seal cited and then handed a suspension for an incident in the defeat at Bristol before Christmas.

The Blues prop was given a seven week ban and ordered to pay £250 costs at a hearing in London on Thursday after being cited for making contact with the eye or eye area.

That leaves director of rugby Rayer short of options in the front row, although he’ll bide his time over a replacement until the club have decided whether or not to appeal.

He said: “We’ll have to wait and see with that, wait for the judgement to come through as to whether we appeal because we were desperately disappointed with the citing and the outcome.

“We can’t say too much at this stage because we’ve got to wait for the judgement, but we are disappointed at Dan because his is one of the quietest guys we have got in the squad.

“It’s a bizarre one really as far as we are concerned, but we will wait for the judgement and take the appropriate action.”

The deadline for clubs to register players is on Thursday and Rayer will bring in someone either on loan or permanently while Seal is suspended.

However, at present he is not considering signing any players to fill other positions at the club, being happy with the options available to him across the squad.

“When something like this happens all of our thoughts go into getting this solved first because we are OK in other positions really,” said Rayer.

“It’s just important that we sort the front row crisis first and foremost.

“In the meantime we’ll have to get somebody on loan or sign someone permanently, but also get Ricky Reeves up to speed quickly.”
