SIX police officers are being investigated by a police watchdog over an arrest outside a Bedford nightclub which left a 19 year old man in a serious condition.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission’s (IPCC) says its investigation into the incident outside Elements in Mill Street, Bedford, in the early hours of May 6 is ‘progressing well’ but investigators are appealing for anyone who has any mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward.

IPCC Commissioner, Mary Cunneen, said: “We are grateful for a good response from the public to our witness appeal but we believe it is possible some mobile phone footage was taken of the incident outside Elements nightclub and we would urge anyone with such material to come forward.

“This could really help the investigation to establish exactly what happened that morning, where regrettably a month on from the incident a young man is still in a serious condition in hospital.”

The injured man is black, 5ft 5ins tall, of muscular build, with short hair and a short beard, and was wearing a white T-shirt and black combat trousers, with black Nike trainers. He is a student living in Bedford.

Two members of door staff at the club were arrested by Bedfordshire Police soon after the incident, but have been bailed until July, and their involvement is now being investigated by the IPCC.

The man who sustained serious injuries remains in a serious condition in hospital. IPCC investigators have spoken to a number of the man’s friends who were with him that morning and are in the course of speaking to a number of club-goers and staff who were also at Elements that night and may have witnessed events. Accounts will also be obtained from a number of other police officers.

Investigators have also been looking at relevant CCTV footage from the area immediately outside the nightclub.

The events occurred outside Elements nightclub on Mill Street in Bedford between around 1 - 2 am on Monday 6 May this year. Any further witnesses can contact the IPCC on 0800 096 9077 or email Bedford_nightclub@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk
