An elderly couple who mistakenly bought a cannabis plant at a car boot sale believing it to be a shrub will not face criminal charges, Bedfordshire Police have confirmed.
Bedfordshire on Sunday reported on Monday how cops turned up to the house of the unknown OAPs' Bedford home to discover ‘the biggest cannabis plant they’d ever seen’.
Officers were that shocked by what they found they took to social networking site Twitter to post the a picture and tweeted: 'Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully-biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!'
It came after the couple were tipped-off their shrubbery was in fact the illegal drug. It is not know how long the plant had been growing in the pensioners’ back garden but police say they had to cut the plant down before it was taken away and destroyed.
A spokeswoman for the force said: “The couple won’t be facing any charges. We got a call about it so it was simply an administrative job for our officers to remove the cannabis. It has been taken away and destroyed.”
Bedfordshire Police added that the couple had been left ‘embarrassed’ by the situation.
