New speed limits have been introduced in the Black Tom area of Bedford - leaving motorists confused.
As part of a 20mph zone scheme, a new 30mph sign was painted at the end of Beaconsfield Street, which is one-way, directly in front of a no-entry sign.
Cllr Colleen Atkins, who has worked for years to ensure safety in the area and obtained funding for the scheme, has expressed her anger at the hiccup.
She said: "After all the hard work of getting the 20mph zone, a mistake like this is made.
"I am very concerned that it could look a mess when repainted as it's on a red patch and not easy to correct.
"I shall press for it to be done properly even if I have to stand over them there and watch as they do it."
The scheme was introduced this week after residents raised concerns years ago about road safety in the area.
The Government has also announced proposals to introduce 20mph speed limits near school gates to prevent accidents and protect children's lives.
Cllr Atkins hopes to get the limit extended to other areas of Bedford including Manton Heights, the Poets area and Queen Street.
She said: "I'm delighted the new 20mph zone in Black Tom is now in force. Many residents had complained to me about speeding cars which put lives at risk.
"I was happy to take up the gauntlet on their behalf and press for the scheme.
"It's important our local roads are safe, particularly for our children.
"The Government's action this week to introduce 20mph speed limits around schools and certain residential roads is the right thing to do."
A spokesman for Bedford Borough Council said: "We have been alerted that some of the signage advising of the new speed restriction in the Prime Ministers area is causing confusion.
"The contractor who carried out the work has been contacted and we hope to rectify the situation as soon as possible."
