The thieves who stole a rugby club’s kit have been warned they’ve got a group of big lads after them.
Members of the Bedford Athletic Rugby Club (pictured) will not take too kindly to whoever is responsible for nicking all their kit – just ten weeks before their first match of the season.
Players arrived at the ground in Wentworth Drive, Putnoe, for the first training session on Tuesday night to discover that the container – where all the shirts, jackets, shorts and socks are kept - had been broken into and left empty.
But the club is baffled as to why anybody would steal the kit – which is going to cost around £5,000 to replace – as it’s clearly branded with their name and sponsors.
The only explanation they can think of is somebody has sold it on to one of the clothing collection companies.
Head coach Roland Winter said: “It’s worthless to anyone else so we’re pleading for it to be returned. We’ve got big aims for this season so to turn up on the first training night and find it’s all been taken is disappointing to say the least.” The stolen clothing included the first team’s home and away kit, the second’s team kit, the Colts kit and a number of ‘warm-up’ items.
And with just eight weeks to go until the first pre-season friendly on August 18 against Bugbrooke it looks unlikely that the team will be able to order new kit in time as it takes around 12 weeks to be delivered.
But they have had a number of donations and Mr Winter said they wanted to thank the Bedford Ath community for all the support received.
He added: “We’ve got some big boys and they’re quite sociable so hopefully they’ll bump into somebody with the shirts down the pub – or not for that person!” Police are investigating and anybody with information can contact Police Sergeant Sharon Falconer on 01234 275217.
