Pot hole service celebrates two years on the roads

Written byKATHRYN CAIN

A POT hole repairal service is celebrating its second birthday as new figures show 7,500 of the holes have been fixed since the initiative started.

Bedford Borough Council’s Pot Hole Hit Squad service was launched in January 2011 to provide a quick response service which was able to carry out permanent repairs to pot holes in the borough. With equipment enabling them to keep tar hot on the move, they were immediately able to carry out permanent repairs and to do so in minutes, in contrast to the old arrangements characterised by temporary patching and repeated trips back to the depot. The Pot Hole Hit Squads are able to carry out many more, longer-lasting repairs.

The Pot Hole Hit Squads will continue to repair potholes across the borough throughout 2013 and local residents can expect to see the squads on a road near them as the older vehicles have been replaced with new highly visible vehicles.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Two years on from its launch, the Pot Hole Hit Squad continues to provide an excellent service for all road users. It has transformed the way that potholes are dealt with in the Borough, carrying out more repairs, to a high standard, and all while getting better value for taxpayers.

“The new vehicles are not only eye-catching; they will also help the Pot Hole Hit Squad to work even more efficiently as they have been custom made to the council’s specification.

“Alongside the resurfacing of many roads during 2013 and the introduction of average speed cameras, the Pot Hole Hit Squad is part of our commitment to make our roads safer for all.”

Local residents can report a pothole by contacting the Highways Helpdesk on 01234 718003. All potholes will be assessed on a priority basis.
