Police seek man targeting convenience shops

Police are investigating after two convenience stores were robbed in a town in the same week.

It is believed the stores, both One Stop Shops, were robbed by the same man wearing a balaclava armed with a black baseball bat.

The first shop in Mollivers Lane, Bromham was targeted at 9.15pm on last Monday where a man threatened two male staff forcing them to hand over £200 in cash.

Only two days later another One Stop Shop was hit in Cause End Road, Wootton the same man walked into the shop at 9.30pm, again waving a baseball bat and demanded money from the two female staff there. There were also two customers in the shop at the time. However, the staff were able to set off alarms and the offender ran away empty handed.

The man is described as being about 5ft 5in tall, and around 30 years old, wearing a black Puffa-style jacket with a gold emblem on the right hand side of the jacket's arm. He was wearing a dark coloured hood, black balaclava and black gloves.

Detective Constable Paul Arrowsmith investigating this case would like to hear from anyone who saw the man entering or leaving either of the shops to contact police as soon as possible.

He said: “No-one was hurt in these incidents but it is clear the robber was agitated and aggressive towards the staff. Given the fact he’s struck twice this week and got away with nothing last night, we are worried that he may attempt another robbery this evening and have contacted other One Stop Shops in the area to warn them.

“However, there are obviously many small shops around the area and we would like to make them aware of this man. Our advice for shop staff is to stay calm if confronted and not to put themselves in any danger. Also, make sure all your security, alarms and cameras are in full working order because these help to deter offenders and also to catch them.”

Det. Con. Arrowsmith can be contacted direct on 01234 275123, or text police on 07786 200011, or call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. You do not have to give your name but you could still receive a cash reward.
