The 29-year-old who works for JA Sylvester Ltd in Ampthill plucked up the courage to enter the contest earlier this year.
He beat off competition from more than 3,000 entrants and is now one of ten finalists battling it out to be crowned cover model and appear on the front of the October issue of the magazine.
He said: "Some of the football team have given me a bit of stick about it but most people think I've got a good chance of winning.
"I would be pretty chuffed if I did because the other guys look pretty good.
"I was shocked when I found out I had made it to through to the final ten."
James, who lives alone in Toddington, leads a very active lifestyle and concentrates on eating healthily.
When he's not working, he can be found at the gym, playing football for Flitwick Town or climbing mountains across the country.
Along with a friend, James is taking part in the Three Peaks challenge later this month to raise money for the Keech Cottage in Luton.
He grew up in Woburn where he lived with his parents and older brother and he then in Flitwick for around five years before moving to Toddington.
After finding out he had made it into the final ten, James was invited down to London with the other men for a photo shoot.
He said: "It was a really good day but a bit nerve-wracking. I got on well with the other lads there."
People can vote for their favourite cover model online until August 14.
The October issue will be on sale from September 7.
