Hospital closure opponents question admissions policy

Health bosses are investigating claims of ‘bed blocking’ at a hospital that faces the threat of closure.

South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT) is looking into allegations made by a GP at a public meeting with the health body last month that patients were being declined admission to Biggleswade Hospital.

The respite centre has been under threat after a fall in the number of users with campaigners collecting more than 4,000 signatures as they battle to keep the facility open.

NHS Bedfordshire and SEPT have left patients and residents in the dark with the health bodies insisting a decision is yet to be made.

John Rooke, chief operating officer for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We have recently been made aware of a decline in admissions at Biggleswade Hospital. SEPT is looking into the reasons behind the fall in demand and will provide us with information imminently.”
