Firefighters tackle thatch roof blaze

Fire and rescue service cordonNearly 60 firefighters are involved in tackling a thatched property fire in Old Ways Road, Ravensden.

Following a 999 call just after 1pm on Thursday, crews from Bedford, Kempston, Sandy, Harrold were initially sent, supported by two more appliances from Cambridgeshire Fire Rescue Service.

Additional Beds and Luton Fire and Rescue Service teams include those crewing the Operational Support Unit, the Aerial Platform, the Incident Command Unit and water carriers are also at the scene.

The British Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Service vehicle has been called for to provide shelter for those from the burning property.

An ambulance is standing by in case medical help is required at any time during the operations.

Firefighters are cutting away part of the thatch to prevent the flames from spreading under the thick blanket of material which makes up prt of the roof of the property.
