Bedford Modern School have appointed Emma Rumbold as Director of Girls’ Sport with the responsibility for the development and management of girls’ sport from Years 3 to 13.
“I have been heavily involved in sport all my life and trained to a high level as a swimmer and gymnast when younger, winning several national medals for swimming. I actually became a teacher because I had a brilliant P.E. teacher when I was at school and I want to inspire girls of all levels to enjoy sport and learn something from it,” said Emma.
Emma, who has played netball both nationally and regionally, previously taught P.E., Biology and Science at Stamford High School and describes herself as motivated and enthusiastic. “I intend to raise the standard of girls’ sport at Bedford Modern School providing more opportunities for girls to compete and take part in sport by increasing the number of fixtures, number of teams and standard thereby increasing the profile of girls’ sport at BMS,” added Emma.
With over 1,200 students at the School, sport has a strong historical position within Bedford Modern School and has produced achievers of note in the national and international arenas including Monty Panesar and Tim Foster. Bedford Modern School aspires to be pioneers at the forefront of school sport development within the 21st century growing into a nationally recognised centre of excellence for PE and Sport providing outstanding quality and opportunity.
Patrick Jerram, Director of Sport at BMS added: “BMS introduced co-education in 2003 and girls’ sport has developed very quickly since this time. We have had both individuals and teams win national championships in rowing, athletics and water polo along with many success stories at regional and local level.
“To build on this excellent start, we believed it was the right time to introduce this new role to help provide the leadership and commitment to take girls’ sport to the next level – something we are excited about and believe we can achieve. Emma was the stand out candidate in what was a very strong field of applicants and her vast experience, knowledge and enthusiasm will, I am sure, greatly benefit the girls at Bedford Modern School.”
