Charity fund plans St George's treble

Bedford is in line for a triple whammy of charity fundraising with three spectacular events to mark St George's week.

The Regimental Band of The Coldstream GuardsOne of the key highlights is another chance to see The Regimental Band of The Coldstream Guards Beating Retreat providing fabulous early evening entertainment at Bedford Rugby Club, Goldington Road on Sunday, April 19.

It is followed by a golf tournament, on St George's Day itself - Thursday, April 23 - and a festive ball on Saturday, April 25.

The week is being staged by the St George's Day Charity Fund, backed by the Rotary Club of Bedford Park.

The organisation has been arranging charity events in the town since 1994 and has raised around £300,000 for local good causes.

This time the main beneficiary will be the East Anglian Air Ambulance but, according to organiser Nick Kier, many other groups in the area also stand to benefit.

It all starts with the Guards who will strut their stuff at The Blues. It promises to be a colourful, exciting military spectacle for all the family with tickets at £8.

Mr Kier said: "This should be a brilliant evening for everyone to enjoy - and support their local charities.

"So many people have benefited over the years and we hope others will continue to do so.

"We hope people will turn out for what is an excellent occasion.

We are also organising a golf day and a festive ball to mark the time around St George's Day and ask people to support them."

This is the 16th staging of events by the Charity Fund, although its founder member, Dave Ledsom will be sadly missed by many.

Mr Ledsom, who did so much work for the group over the years, died late last year.

Mr Kier added: "Dave played a massive part in this over the years and we want this to be a big success in his memory."
