Bedford Borough Council has announced work to resurface Castle Road, in Bedford, will start onMonday (August 2)
Following the coldest winter for more than 30 years the council has been repairing record numbers of potholes and resurfacing carriageways to bring our roads up to standard. As part of this programme, Castle Road will be completely resurfaced to ensure a safe, high quality road surface for all of its users.
The council had aimed to complete the work earlier this year. However, after consultation with the police and local residents it was agreed to wait and carry out the works after the River Festival and during the school summer holidays in order to minimise disruption.
Castle Road will be resurfaced between Bushmead Avenue and Newnham Avenue in three stages. The work is expected to finish by August 13.
In order to minimise effects on local businesses there will be overnight closures between Bushmead Avenue and Pembroke Street. However, the other two stages of work will involve daytime closures.
Full diversion routes will be displayed around the works.
The carriageway will be planed to a depth of at least 100mm and a new binder and surface will be laid.
Councillor Charles Royden, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "We had aimed to carry out this work much sooner but agreed to carry it out during the school summer holidays to try and minimise disruption.
"Since the extremely harsh winter we have been faced with a serious backlog of repairs and we are continuing to work through all problem areas in the borough.
"Castle Road is being resurfaced as part of this ongoing programme of works which have been made possible by the £6million we pledged in April to improve our roads.
"As with all unavoidable road closures, regrettably the works on Castle Road will cause temporary inconvenience and I would ask drivers to avoid the area if possible. If not, please leave extra time for your journey whilst we carry out these vital works."
