The bad news is Bedford is not getting a new bus station . . . the good news is that there’s £6m being spent tarting up the old one.
Last December we revealed that £300m plans for the redevelopment of Bedford town centre, including a brand new bus station, had been ditched.
Bedford Borough Council and partners St Modwen dumped the idea in the face of the massive downturn in the economy. But this week it was announced that £6m had been put together using savings and underspends on other schemes to be used ‘regenerating’ it.
Allhallows car park and the public lavatories will also be refurbished.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “The bus station area has been widely recognised as needing improvement for decades, and I am determined that in spite of the economic climate we make real progress here.
“It is a key gateway for Bedford, and people rightly want to see real regeneration in and around the bus station.
“There is a lot of work to do, for example with bus operators and planners, but at last we can now start the ball rolling towards delivering an improved bus station area for the town centre.” More details of the improvement plans will be revealed in the coming months.
