A councillor is calling for a special brick to be removed from a sex shop which he says is an insult to the late Sir Jimmy Saville’s death.
Ken Lynch, parish councillor for Sandy, said that now that 84-year-old Jim’ll Fix It star is dead he is continuing with his demand for the brick to be taken out of the wall of the Adult Pit Stop off the A1, near Tempsford.
He was part of the ‘Stick a Brick fundraising’ campaign that raised thousands of pounds for the spinal unit at Stoke Mandeville hospital in 1981 and which was organised on behalf of the Jimmy Saville Charity Appeal.
Around 100 limited edition bricks made bearing the fleur-de-lys crest of the Prince of Wales were specially created to commemorate the International Year of the Disabled.
Cllr Lynch, 74, said: “I worked for Sir Jimmy for three years on this campaign.
The brick was put into the building before it became an Indian restaurant and now it’s a sex shop.
“I protested against it and tried to get the brick removed. People might say I’m being unreasonable. When Sir Jimmy was alive I couldn’t really publicise it but now that he’s gone I am demanding it be taken out. I hold Sir Jimmy in great esteem and I feel it’s an insult to him and the way he lived his life. There’s no reason for it to be there. I will fight to get it removed. Sir Jimmy was a wonderful person.” Martin Cobban, manager of the Adult Pit Stop said that he’d be happy to talk to Mr Lynch if he could give him a valid reason why the brick should be removed. He bought the brick and decided to build it into the premises which he previously owned with his brother and which was originally a Happy Eater.
Back in 2006, Bedfordshire on Sunday reported on the dispute but at the time Cllr Lynch said he couldn’t prove that it was one of the special bricks but he has since found one that he had which is the same. When he had an extension built on his home in Sandy he had the brick put in.
Mr Cobban said that the article was the best ‘advertising they had never done’ and that they had a lot more customers.
