The Bishop of Bedford flexed his muscles and joined with members of the Bedford Athletic Rugby team in a tug-of-war to demonstrate the extreme injustice of world poverty.
Bishop Richard took up one end of a rope with members of the Bedford Athletic rugby team on the other. He was the lone 'tugger' against the combined forces of the rugby players, in a situation which mirrors that of many struggling developing countries all over the world.
Christian Aid works to bring aid and assistance to people who do not have access to the wealth and resources of the developed world.
The tug-of-war between the Bishop and the Bedford Ath rugby players was a call to action ahead of Christian Aid Week to the volunteers, supporters and hundreds of thousands of people in Britain who give so generously during the week every year.
Bishop Richard said: "World poverty is the greatest injustice which exists today.
"One lone Bishop against a group of rugby players is a powerful demonstration of the inequality which prevails in our world and which prevents so many people from accessing food, healthcare and education - some of the most basic elements of life which we often take for granted."
Christian Aid Week 2009 is happening between the 10 - 16 May and will see 300,000 volunteers take to the streets of the UK to collect funds for the world's poorest and most disadvantaged people.
