Bedford
resident Matthew Monk is riding high after his skill at creating the perfect cup of coffee has led him to reach the regional finals in the Costa Barista of the Year competition.

In celebration, and to help Matt practise the signature drink that he will have to impress the judges with for the next stage of this international competition, Costa is staging a Happy Hour for customers between 1-2pm on 7th September at the Midland Road store.

All customers are invited to sample the signature drink, “Black Forest Gateau Coffee”, in return for a donation to Costa’s charity, The Costa Foundation.

Twenty four year old Matt, who grew up in Cardington and went to de Montfort University, is a Barista Maestro and assistant manager of the Bedford Costa store, having worked there for two years. He comments: “It means a great deal to me to be a part of this competition and I really enjoy the challenges that this round has presented me. The competition was very tough - all the competitors were highly skilled baristas and it was very close. There were lots of congratulations from the team when they found out that I had won the area event.”

As an area winner, Matt will be competing against 6 other baristas on 16th September to go through to the finals and the chance of becoming Champion of Champions, winning a holiday for two. At the regionals, Matt will be asked to complete a grind and dose check, deliver two drinks to Costa’s exacting standards, and present his speciality drink.

* Black Forest Gateau Coffee – a mix of milk chocolate, vanilla, and black cherry with a shot of mocha Italia coffee topped with freshly whipped cream with dark chocolate shavings, plus a whole black cherry on top.
