THE Mayor has told his cabinet and members of the public that Meadow Lane is still the preferred location for a gypsy and traveller site in Bedford Borough and the council has no intention of developing Fairhill.

At a meeting of the authority’s executive on Wednesday night, Mayor Dave Hodgson said that the council was progressing with the long-delayed Meadow Lane site in Bedford. We understand that following the completion of survey by Anglian Water, it could developed as early as next year.

And when asked if either he, or the council, had any plans to use the Clapham Road site known as Fairhill for anything other than employment and a park and ride, he said ‘no’.

However, it will not prevent the group of five councillors progressing with their own application for a travellers’ site at Fairhill.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We have now received a report which confirms that odour is no longer a concern at Meadow Lane, and where the council already has planning permission for the additional pitches needed by 2021, it remains committed to their delivery at this site.”
