A FAILED asylum seeker who battered a brothel madam to death with a Chinese dragon ornament was convicted of her murder on Tuesday.

Gang Wang, 48, had been hired by Yong Li Qui, who was known as Linda, to look after the property and to greet the clients, but was sacked because she

said he was too ‘sullen.’

On hearing the news, Wang lost his temper and hit her with his fists before launching a prolonged attack with the 4lb Jade-coloured ornament inside the Bedford brothel.

She suffered a fracture to her skull that was so severe her brain tissue could be seen and she died a few days later in hospital.

Jailing him for life, with a minimum term of 15 years, Judge Richard Foster said: “Despite your pleas with her to change her mind, she would not do so and you lost your temper, hitting her with your fists and then arming

yourself with a Chinese ornament and repeatedly and ferociously attacking her.”

The jury of 7 men and 5 women at Luton crown court heard that Wang was in this country illegally as a failed asylum seeker.

He had pleaded not guilty to murdering 42-year-old Yong Li Qui, but was convicted.

Prosecutor, Beverley Cripps said that while he admitted responsibility for her death, he had denied he intended to kill her or cause her really serious harm. His defence was that he was suffering from an abnormality of mental

functioning at the time.

The fatal attack took place at Ms Qui’s flat in Ashburnham Road, Bedford on March 18 last year. She died on March 25 from head injuries.

Miss Cripps told the jury: “Mrs. Qui ran a brothel at the flat and Wang was employed by her to look after the place and its customers.

“He had worked in the same capacity a couple of years before but had been dismissed by her.

“In 2012 she contacted him again and offered him a job but things were not going as they should have and he thought she was going to ask him to leave.

“After a tense phone call the day before her killing he told another woman at the flat known as ‘Mandy’ that he would kill Linda if she asked him to leave again.”

Miss Cripps said Mandy did not take the threat seriously but thought Wang really did not want to leave his employment and the flat.

She continued: “The following day Mandy was in her bedroom when she heard Linda tell Wang he was dismissed and would have to leave. He was pleading with her to change her mind. Then he armed himself with a heavy ornament and

rained blows on her head in a prolonged attack.

“Mandy ran out into the street to get help, and when the first police officer arrived Wang had tried to hide the ornament under a cushion and had washed the blood off his hands.

“Linda was still alive but critical. She underwent neurosurgery but died on March 25.

“He told police that she had dismissed him and he had lost his temper and hit her repeatedly with the object.”

The jury were shown the jade coloured ornamental dragon that weighed 4lb. Parts of it had broken off in the attack.

Miss Cripps said the attack appeared to have taken place at three locations in the flat. A post mortem showed 17 areas of trauma on her head and 27 other sites of injury on her body including some that suggested she had put

her arms up to try and defend herself.

In his police interview Wang said he worked as ‘a nanny’ at what he described as a massage parlour. He said Linda had told him his face was ‘sullen’ which would have an effect on the customers, and although he said

he would change she insisted on sacking him.

‘It was an injustice but I really did not intend to kill her,’ he is alleged to have told officers.

Defence barrister Sam Mainds said Wang will face a difficult time in prison as he speaks barely any English. He said he was one of a very few Mandarin Chinese speakers in jail in this country. He said: “There was a rise in

anger by him which resulted in him taking this woman’s life.”
