Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: Short, expensive and lacks a certain magic

When I usually see a newly released ‘game of the film’ sitting in a shop, I quickly walk on and look at something else on the shelf. The last one I remember that was any good was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which was released some ten years ago.

I started this game expecting it to be awful, but really it wasn’t too bad.

It follows almost exactly the same plot as the latest film and as a result, for me personally, the game only lasted a tiny bit longer than four hours.

This is my main qualm with the game, as at a retail price of nearly £50, you get around five hours gameplay in the main story, tops.

The game is massively overpriced for what you get.

Onto the technical parts of the game, it’s pretty average all over.

Graphically, it’s what you’d expect from a game like this. It looks good but is never going to bring any sort of ‘wow’ factor.

Whilst the gameplay isn’t great by any means, it’s an awful lot better than I expected it to be.

It’s essentially a third person shooter, but instead of firing bullets at waves of enemies, you curse and hex hordes of death eaters; think Gears but with spells.

There are no real hitches that I found either; when you want to move left, you move left and when you want to cast ‘impendimentia’ at a troll, it actually happens.

In most film-to-game adaptations I have played I have found the gameplay to be a bit useless in parts, so this was a breath of fresh air.

But, to stress, it was nothing remarkable.

I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy this game at least a little bit.

As short as it was, it definitely passed a few hours and I’m sure any other Potter fan would enjoy it if they detached themselves from overly critical thought for just a few hours.

But, if asked whether it’s worth the RRP, I’d have to say no.
