The body of a middle-aged man was recovered from Bedford River at 3pm today (24/07/07) after he reportedly jumped in for a swim.

The man was under water for approximately 35 minutes after onlookers saw him take off his clothes and jump in on the side of the Park Inn.

Police and Emergency services were at the scene immediately and a rescue boat searched the river for the man.

A woman at the riverside where the man jumped him was thought to be his girlfriend was in hysterics as time went on.

The rescue team pulled the man's body out after he had been swept over the other side by strong currents and he was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
