Winter Skin Care

SKIN: it’s the largest organ of your body (a really useful fact to have up your sleeve in the pub quiz) and boy does it let you know big-time when it’s not happy!

It will dry out and start to itch as soon as you turn up the central heating and dry out some more when you go outside into the cold weather. So make sure you’ve got plenty of heavy duty skin lotion and use it every few hours particularly on your hands which have so much work to do and are often more exposed to the elements.

Lips; especially, need emollients, products containing shea butter will keep them supple and safely kissable.

Feet; They need extra exfoliating to keep heels from cracking. Put on cream and then wear socks to bed once a week. The same goes for hands (but with gloves, not socks!)

Other tips for cold-weather beauty:

  • Don't use toner or anything with alcohol in it.
  • When cleansing in winter use a milky-soft cleanser and remove with a warm, damp flannel.
  • Get a good moisturizing night cream, even if you don't use one in summer and you might need an eye cream, but don't slather on too much. After all, eye creams attract moisture, and moisture takes up space, meaning eye creams can cause puffiness.
  • Use foundation, even if you think it's for your granny. It doesn't have to be heavy, just make sure it contains SPF 15 or higher. If you don't like foundation, use a lightly tinted moisturizer.
  • Or you can add moisturizer to your foundation and use loose powder to set it. But remember, the colour of your face may be lighter than in summer!
  • Dust a touch of bronzer on temples, cheekbones, and the bridge of your nose to warm up winter pallor. Pink and peach blushes also add a sun-kissed look even when the skies are grey.
  • An ampule-oil pack for hair once in a while is a good idea in winter.

And finally, don't forget to exfoliate all that dry skin, but stay with gentle methods - no scratchy ‘puffs’ or abrasive loofahs or you’ll do more damage than the bitter winds.
