Healthy Eating
Eating to live - or living to eat?
It really is true, you are what you eat. Fortunately for all those people who wake up with good intentions, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eat something healthy and filling for breakfast and you will be less likely to snack on rubbish later on.
Diets come and diets go but when all's said and done common sense is the key to eating well.
You know that eating 'Five A Day' is good for you but tucking into just one extra portion of fruit and vegetables a day could cut your risk of dying early from any cause by 20 per cent - and we're not just talking about you here. Your kids, too, are laying the groundwork of their health for the rest of their natural lives. Everybody knows that drinking a chocolate and marshmallow milkshake with cream on top is not exactly providing your body with those essential nutrients. That said, there is no reason why you shouldn't have the occasional tasty treat…!
The NHS Live Well campaign offers this advice:
Meals based on starchy foods such as rice and pasta, with plenty of fruit and vegetables (and not too much fat, salt or sugar) will give you all the nutrients you need, without the extra calories you don't.
When it comes to a healthy diet, balance is the key to getting it right. We all need to provide our bodies with the energy and nutrients required to function well and feel great.
That means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportion, so that over time we get all the nutrients we need to keep ourselves healthy.
