But how do you choose who to go to?

Having confidence in your hairdresser is a must. Who hasn't, at some time or other, scuttled out of the hairdresser's wailing in abject misery and headed straight to the nearest tap to plunge their head under running water? I know I have; several times.  It's almost as tricky to find a stylist with whom you can be happy ever after as it is a marriage partner.

But don't despair, here are a few ideas that might help you make a decision in the great hairdresser hunt.

What you want is a hairdresser who understands your hair. Of course you need him or her to help you keep it in good condition but you also want someone who has their finger on the pulse of what's new and what's fashionable.

And even more importantly you want a stylist who will take the time to listen to your wishes and concerns, discuss them with you and then give you sound advice on what will work for you.

Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations - as long as you're impressed by how they look, of course!

If their experience is good and hassle-free it's worth doing a bit more research - the who, where and how much factors. Some people may selfishly want to keep that information to themselves, if so, move swiftly on to the next source - and strike them off your Christmas card list.

If you see a style you like on a total stranger don't be afraid to ask who cuts their hair - just make sure your request for information is not mistaken for a chat-up line. (Unless, of course, that happens to be what it is) Most women will be flattered by the compliment.

Once you have narrowed the field down, arrange a consultation; it may just be an informal chat but you'll get the chance to give the salon the once-over and see if you like the stylist.

Take along any pictures that represent the kind of look you hanker after but be prepared to take advice on the style that would most suit the colour of your hair, its texture and the shape of your face. An experienced, creative and confident stylist may have to curb your enthusiasm if faced with a request for something that is clearly quite wrong for you but if they're any good they will come up with much better ideas.

If you are content to go ahead make a proper appointment, trust that you've made the right choice and look forward to the blossoming of a happy, long-term relationship!
