For the Family

No matter what the weather – come rain, snow, frost, hell or high water - it’s still really good to get up and go. As long as you're dressed for the occasion and you choose the right activity, the whole family will benefit from a few hours spent outside in the fresh air and daylight.
A walk or bike ride is a great way to boost your serotonin and Vitamin D levels, both of which help to boost our mood. One of the best sources of Vitamin D is via sunlight on our skin, so make sure you step out in style on brighter days if possible.
Doing outdoor activities as part of a family is also a great way to celebrate your time together. Take advantage of the school holidays to try a new activity or head off for a family adventure. You'll all value the time spent together.
Being outdoors and active is also great for your physical well-being. A family walk or a cycle, or anything that raises the heart rate a little, will keep you all in great shape.
At this time of year we sometimes enjoy cold but stunningly clear and bright days - and if you're prepared for a spontaneous outdoors expedition (that is, you have all the right gear to hand) then you will be able to make the most of a beautiful day.
Walking: It's an obvious choice - but with so many, many different routes and types of walking trails spread across the UK a family stroll is an obvious option during the Christmas holidays. If you have young children then head to a country park or woodland where exposure to the wind and snow will be less of a problem. Older children may enjoy a bracing hike along a river or up a small hill. There is no point in making the outing too long or arduous as no one will thank you. A couple of hours of walking should be enough to warm up and work off some calories.
Cycling: For days when it's not snowy or icy, a family bike ride is perfect for blowing away the cobwebs of the Christmas excesses. Aim for off-road routes or head to a mountain biking centre. Off road routes are so much more rewarding for views and they are obviously safer than trying to negotiate roads with busy traffic. But do beware of wet and slippery conditions. The ideal bike for winter is a mountain bike or hybrid bike with chunky tyres for better grip.
Wildlife watching: Winter brings a whole new perspective on the UK's wildlife. Many species also look very different thanks to winter fur or camouflage. Wildlife reserves and centres are ideal for family trips. Check their opening hours over the Christmas holidays before setting out. For the more adventurous or energetic adventurer then a hike deep in the countryside could bring fantastic wildlife sightings.
And when/if the snow comes: Make sure your have your sledges at the ready so you can enjoy many hours of messing about in the wet, cold stuff with family and friends. Sledging, snow balling, building igloos and simply running around in the snow are great for both mental and physical well-being. Go on all you adults, embrace your inner child. Kids, drag the adults off the sofas and make sure they get outside this winter!
