Ships blog – Day 4 – Kusadasi to Athens
We then retired to the nearest bar for a quick nightcap only to be greeted by several of our new chums from Ireland (and Claire from Canada). A quick drink turned into a mini session made all the more enjoyable by a pianist/singer who was able to play and sing anything requested of him. Sadly this talent was diluted by the rest of the bar loudly joining in as we belted out every rock anthem known to man. I was escorted, still singing (by this time I one of my old standards ‘Free Nelson Mandela’) back to the cabin by Michele and Lizzie who at seven years old kindly pointed out that he had now been free for 20 years and maybe I should move on.
As I write this I am having a hair of the dog beer on in the lovely Cafe Kapyatie on Adrianou in the chic quarter of Athens below the Acropolis.
While it is true we got here through a sprawling and scruffy concrete jungle, this part of Athens is very beautiful and without a whiff of smog or pollution in sight.
The Acropolis and the Olympieion are stunning and the shops in this area are both diverse and a good place to grab a bargain. Sadly the otherwise friendly taxi driver who brought us here from the port pointed out that there is an abundance of sales due in large part to Greece’s current economic problems. The present Mrs Lowe is doing her best to bring Greece out of crisis on her own and as I sit here with my beer and peanuts I can smell her credit card burning.
On a final note I ought to add that wherever we have been it has always been possible to get free Wi-Fi connection in cafes and restaurants. This is in contrast to our boat which, as another ship mate has pointed out and asked me to mention that it costs $35 per hour to be connected on board. Good job I don’t have to haggle or it would be up to $50.
