Detectives in Bedford are appealing for information following the attempted robbery of a bus driver at around 6.30pm on Monday.

The driver pulled up behind another bus at a stop on Carron Road near to the junction with Tyne Crescent.

As several of the passengers got off the bus, the engines unexpectedly cut out and the driver was unable to start them back up again. It is believed that the external emergency stop button had been pressed.

The driver got off the bus, taking the cash box with him, to go and reset the button where he was joined by the driver of the other bus.

Approximately seven youths then surrounded the drivers and attempted to take the cash box and a mobile phone. They were unsuccessful and fled the scene.

Detective Sergeant Jim Mallen, investigating officer said: “This was a shocking experience for the driver who was simply going about his daily work. We are appealing for anyone who can identify the youths involved to come forward, maybe you were a passenger on one of the buses or were in the area at the time?”

Anyone with information can contact DS Mallen on 01234 275141, Bedfordshire Police on 01234 841212, text 07786 200011, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
